This paper considers how the expanding geographical boundaries of architectural history influence our conceptualization of the discipline—in other words who (and what) we think are the subjects of architectural history and furthermore for whom we think its narratives are written.

Dana Arnold

Dana Arnold is Professor of Architectural History and Director of the Centre for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Southampton. Her recent books include Rural Urbanism: London Landscapes in the early nineteenth century, MUP, 2006; Art History: A Very Short Introduction, OUP, 2004; Reading Architectural History, Routledge, 2002; and Representing the Metropolis, Ashgate, 2000. She has edited several volumes, the latest of which include Cultural Identities and the Aesthetics of Britishness, MUP 2004; (with Andrew Ballantyne) Architecture as Experience, Routledge 2004; (with Margaret Iversen) Art and Thought, Blackwell, 2003. She has held fellowships at the University of Cambridge, Yale University, and the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles and has been a visiting professor at various institutions in the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada. Her forthcoming book on the hospital in London will be published by Routledge.
